| California Style- Mostly built as a one or one-and-half story home. Influences are from Japanese style architecture. Most well known is the Gamble House in Pasadena by the Greene brothers. The house usually have gables facing the street, and low sweeping roof lines with extra long overhangs. Because the Arts and Crafts movement was about returning to nature and departing from the industrialize world, you will find the homes painted in brown or dark green colors, or stained wood, shingles. The entry door usually puts you into the living room. The interiors usually have wainscoting, built-in wood cabinets, and the ceilings are usually covered with plastering and accent with wooden beams in a criss-crossed patterns. |
